Start working on my DBA (Doctorate of Business) research proposal

I don't want to lose the infatuation of being academia by having graduated from my MBA-only, it has to continue. Today, I start working on my DBA selection process, that is planned to be in Grenoble Ecole de Management in France and Swiss.

Some credentials have to be collected from Medan, my hometown, where my sister saves all of my important papers. Then tomorrow, I will have to write the research proposal, doesn't need to be that long, but it needs to be what it takes to be a great proposal.

... and that's how it's done! Thesis is marked...

So today whilst spending some time with Wife right after evening prayer, I unintentionally opened my University internal sites (https://my.wbs.ac.uk), and checked whether the thesis is already evaluated or not; had to admit that I am a bit trembling. And voila!

The thesis (we called it P&D, stands for Project and Dissertation) is already marked, and got a merit! I have to admit, that it marks an end of a long journey, that started...

2012 - I enrolled to the global energy MBA in Warwick Business School. Friend told me that it is a good programme, especially for those who works in Energy business, but then it won't be only about Oil and Gas, but it will touch base electricity, renewables and clean energy, and many other things.

My friend, Singab, helped me through the selection process, by guarding the door in WFT training room in Buzurgan (one of the operating base in Iraq), so it couldn't be accessed by anyone else. The purpose was to ensure that my internet connection would be decent enough to teleconference during the interview with University. The effort was paid off. I got scholarship for this program, a 50% cut of the tuition fee. For me, it's a lot of money to save...

Had to admit, that my former company, WFT, helped me a lot for this MBA, especially in the first 1.5 years, cause it paid my air ticket to UK, and at the same time I can comfortably adjust my time off based on the time I had to be in UK to study, take the exam, and discuss amongst students.

2013 - I had to take the sustainability courses in University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. A very interesting perspective of sustainability business case and approach, good professors lecturing here, etc. The complete video can be seen in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OraQcmyrtNE

2014 - The final course that is Strategic Advantage was conducted in Shanghai, in conjunction with Tongji School of Economic and Management. The visit to Siemens, the coal-generated electricity company and all, made this course an interesting one.

2015 - Finally submitted the thesis on 20th-sh of April, and got the mark just last week!

Alhamdulillah, Thanks God!

Now, I am waiting for the procedures for the graduation ceremony in WBS, UK (probably in July 2015), which unfortunately clashes with Eid Fitr :( (what a predicament!)

Anyway, I am happy for now, but the greater challenge already exists ahead; that is the selection process for my DBA (PhD in Business) in Grenoble (France), http://en.grenoble-em.com/doctorate-business-administration-dba

Being challenged differently

So, here's the summary to date (from the view of my professional life)...

2002 - Joined SLB
2010 - Joined WFT
2014 - Joined CDS

in between,

2012 - Enrolled to WBS
2013 - Took courses in UBC Business School
2014 - Took courses in Tongji School of Economic and Management

The one that really made me having all the knowledge in oilfield is when I was in SLB. Training is excellent, the opportunities and experiences are top notch.

Whilst in WFT, the environment I was in (Iraq), made me tougher than I thought I could be. In CDS, is the first time of taking a senior management level.

In WBS and other business schools i was taking the courses in, it taught me something different, broaden the horizon in term of knowledge (theory), city-wise, etc.

This year, it should be something else more challenging...

This part of my life is finishing

I started this back in 2012 when I was pretty much having a lot of spare time; so instead of wasting it for nothing, so I took the GEMBA (Global Energy) MBA as advised by one of my dear friend, Sheharyar Khan.

The whole process even though complicated, but made easy, including awarded scholarship about GBP 4,500 for the first semester.

After 2 years+ of having blended (modular) learning of occasionally flying to UK (Coventry) to have mid-term and classes there, now it (almost) comes to an end. Just last week, I submitted the thesis (sent it soft copy and hard copy) to the university.

Within this 3-4 weeks, there will be announcement of hopefully I can get my graduation in June or July 2015, but not too sure if I can attend the ceremony in UK, cause it clashes with the Eid, which normally celebrated with family in Indonesia.

Now, this part of my life (MBA part) is though tough and fun, but almost there. I am in the process to enrol to DBA study program, that will be 4-5 years of blended learning. Let's hope and try for the best as always.

Why becoming a Minister? part 1

Let's see and think why one should be a minister.

A minister is/does have...
a. Full of administrative job
b. Paramount responsibilities
c. Complicated bureaucracy
d. Not having full authority of anything than his department
e. Bad salary. He/she will have salary much lesser than any of the state-owned company (BUMN); and please don't try to compare it with the private company
f. More political party driven

So, why should one really eager to become a minister. Sound to me like a very bad day job. Some ministries got caught by Indonesian Corruption Watch, makes it even worst...

Very simple life...

Having a simple life is a good feeling that I experience now. However in the same time, I need to develop the business from the existing point to more profitable and sustainable one in order to put 'Tabratas' mark on this company.

Hopefully good...
